Description:Having started by understanding the views, behaviours and needs of female sex workers we next began to design solutions. Performance at judging the sex from photographs with hair concealed was disrupted if the photographs were inverted, which implies that the superficial cues contributing to the decision are not processed in a purely 'local' way. When we needed to understand healthworker bias around serving female sex workers we challenged a group of sex workers to create a model of the "ideal sex worker-friendly health centre" using Lego blocks. This process generated a wide range of concepts, allowing us to choose the most promising ones to build and test. Performance was also disrupted if the faces were shown in photographic negatives, which is consistent with the use of 3-D information, since negation probably operates by disrupting the computation of shape from shading. This simple intervention was able to catch the attention of sex workers who take matatus to and from work. Building on this fieldwork, behavioural economics supported a more data-driven approach to understanding the psychology behind human attitudes.
